WILMINGTON, Ohio (AP)

The sharply rising number
of obese Americans is
leading medical-equipment
manufacturers and ambulance
crews to supersize their
stretchers.
Manufacturers are
adding thicker aluminum
frames, bulkier connectors
and extra spine supports
to create stretchers
with a capacity of 650
pounds, instead of the
standard 350 to 500.
Ambulance crews are
switching to the heavy-duty
models to avoid injuries
to rescue workers and
patients alike...

Satcher: Obesity
almost as bad as smoking
Obesity is reaching "epidemic proportions"
in the United States, Surgeon General David
Satcher said Thursday, and could soon cause
as much preventable disease and death as
cigarette smoking.
More than 61 percent of adults and 14
percent of adolescents are affected by obesity
and some 300,000 die each year from health
problems directly related to obesity, Satcher
noted...

Topel had tried exercise, weight-loss
pills and every diet, real or fad,
around. But at age 15, she’d reached
260 pounds and a difficult decision:
It was time to try surgery. Operating
was scary, but her mother had undergone
it and lost 100 pounds - and Amy
was tired of classmates’ taunts.

Survey finds few put responsibility
on fast-food restaurants |

Aug. 11 —
Parents, not fast-food restaurants,
are most responsible for the rise
of obesity in American children,
a survey said Tuesday. Two out of
three U.S. households surveyed by
ACNielsen said the parent or guardian
was to blame for obesity in children
17 and under, with fast-food restaurants
blamed by only 10 percent and food
manufacturers named by only 1 percent. |

Obesity top health threat
WASHINGTON (Reuters) --
Obesity is the No. 1 health
threat in the United States
today, the head of the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention said.

While much of her time is
spent preparing to fight
anthrax, smallpox, and biological
threats, and diseases like
SARS and West Nile virus,
the CDC's Dr. Julie Gerberding
said Americans are much
more likely to die from
cancer, heart disease, and
diabetes caused by smoking,
eating too much and exercising
